It was Jessie's birthday, and she was feeling kind of down. She hadn't spoken to one of her best friends in a few days, and Sanda was busy with her new fiancee Reid. She had Maggie May, her beloved rabbit, but she took comfort in some rocky road ice cream and re-watching the final episode of Office.
Angela and Dwight were married. It made Jessie happy but sad at the same time, she didn't know if she would ever find love like they had. So it looked like another birthday alone.
She was getting ready to pour herself a drink. She wasn't a drinker, but she hated the thought of being alone on her birthday. Just then, the doorbell rang.
She answered it, running her hair through her hair to tidy it up a bit. She was shocked to see Melinda, Sanda, Reid, and a handsome cowboy.
“what are you guys doing here?” Jessie smiled.
“We remembered what today was, and we know we have neglected you lately. We wanted to find some way to make it up to you,” Melinda smiled.
“That's nice, but you really didn't have to...”
“Yes we did,” Sanda agreed. “This is my cousin Ray, from Dallas. He's single, you know.”
Jessie blushed. “I'm kind of shy, I really don't have too many handsome guys coming here...”
“Thanks, Jessie. Sanda was right about you. You're everything she said you were and then some,” Ray smiled.
She noticed he had nice blue eyes, and also that the jeans he was wearing fit him just perfectly.
“Jessie, are you checking out Ray's butt,” Melinda giggled.
Now Jessie turned red for real this time. “Oh, no, I'm sorry, I know it's not polite to stare...I didn't mean to scare you off...”
“Actually, Jessie, you're my kind of girl. I like a girl who knows what she wants,” Ray grinned.
“Oh, my,” Sanda laughed. “Maybe we should leave the two of them alone.”
“No!” Ray and Jessie shouted at the same time, causing everyone to break into fits of laughter.
“I wouldn't mind being alone with you, but seeing as this is kind of our first date,” Ray laughed. “Maybe it wouldn't be appropriate.”
“A date? Is this what this is?” Jessie grinned again.
“If you don't mind us tagalongs,” Melinda spoke up.
“Of course not. This could be a start of a new beginning for me...”
“I'd like that Jessie. I hope we can take our time and really get to know each other. And then, who knows? Maybe I've just met my soul mate.”
“Sanda, thank you for introducing us. Is there any way I can repay you two for cheering me up on my birthday?” Jessie asked Sanda and Melinda.
“Just be yourself. That's the best present anyone could ask for,” Melinda hugged Jessie, followed by Sanda and finally Ray.
Jessie smiled. This was going to be her best year ever, she was sure of that.
