For Jessie, I hope you like this!
Ch 1
So after David Wallace gave Toby his job back, he realized that things might be awkward at the office. After all, Dwight hated him enough to fire him, and then there was the fling with Meredith. He didn't even know what he hoped for anymore. Of course, it would be nice if something were to work out between them, but to be honest, he figured that he was just another notch on her bedpost. Oh well. Fate had it out for him. Even Michael was no longer around to torment him, it would always be someone else, something else to drag him down.
So on his first day back, it was strange. Jim and Pam were gone, and Andy had left a long time ago. Creed had been arrested, and Stanley had retired. Of course, Phyllis and Erin were nice to him, he'd never had any problem with them. But he went to the annex to put his eight hours in, hopefully without any problem, when he received the most unexpected of visitors.
“Hey stranger. Glad you're back. I kind of heard that you were fired for being the Scranton Strangler,” came the feminine voice.
Toby looked up. He never had known how to take Meredith.
“Um, no. Who started that rumor? Michael or Dwight?”
“I think I did actually,” she laughed.
“Why would you do such a thing?”
“Who knows why people do the things they do. I was probably drunk, if that makes you feel any better.”
Toby turned around, ready to do more paper work.
“Hey,” Meredith spoke up. “Are you going to treat your girlfriend like that?”
Now he was really surprised. “My girlfriend?”
“Yeah. I kind of thought after..you know...that we had a thing together.”
“I don't know. I never really thought about it.”
“I know I ain't Nellie, but I know you like redheads. Haven't you noticed I dyed my hair?”
He took off his glasses and smiled. “It looks nice, Meredith.”
She took his hand. “My place is free tonight if you want to stop by the house. My son is all grown up, well, that's another story for a different day. But I'm all alone, you're all alone. Why don't we be lonely togethger?”
“I'd like that. You're nice, Meredith.”
“Tell that to all these morons who've written me off as a lush long ago,” she shrugged before headed off to work.
Toby watched her walk away. True, he still loved Nellie, but maybe, just maybe, this could be the new beginning that he'd always hoped for. But at the end of the day, he was still Toby Flenderson. It wouldn't work out, so why should he even bother?
