For Jessie and Sanda
It was a dark day for Genoa City. The grand dame of the city had gone on to a better place, and the world seemed a bit darker for it.
Jill had locked herself in her room, refusing to take any visitors. Even though she and Katherine had had their share of ups and downs over the years, mostly downs, somehow a begrudging respect and friendship of sorts had been formed. There would never be another Katherine Chancellor ever again, and the thought was almost too much for Jill to take in.
It was three in the afternoon, and preparations were being made for Katherine's funeral. To tell the truth, Jill didn't even know if she could attend. She'd often wished the worst on her arch nemesis, but never in a million years did she wish something like this on her. There were so many things she'd wanted to say to her, so many wasted years, and now it was all too late.
As she started to pick up a drink, there was a knock on her door.
“Go away!” Jill hollered, determined to polish off that drink.
Still, the caller persisted. “Mom?”
Jill set the glass down. Could it be that her son Phillip had returned?
She ran over and sure enough it was Phillip who had been calling for her. She stared at him for a minute before embracing him.
“Oh, son, you're home. You have no idea...”
“About Katherine? I know. Cane called me. I had to come home. What's going on in here? Are you having a party...a party of one?” He looked over at the half empty liquor bottle.
“So what? So what if I drink? It's my business...”
“No Mom. I care about you. Do you really think she would want to see you like this? We both know what alcohol can do to a person...is this really the best way to remember her?”
“It's my own d**n business how I choose to remember her. Now are you going to hand me back my drink?”
“No, Mom. I can't let you do this. I miss her too. Remember, she raised me. She was a hell of a woman. But just remember, no matter how much I loved her, I only had one mom.”
Jill wiped the tears from her face. “Me?”
“No,Victor Newman ! Of course it's you, who else would I be talking about?”
With that, Jill smiled her first smile in years. “Oh Phillip, if you'd only known me back then...”
“I know all about you. I know how you stole my dad from Katherine But the past is in the past. We can only go forward. I don't know about you but I only have today to look forward to. After all, tomorrow is not guaranteed. Let's just take each day at a time. I promise you this, Mom, I will be here for as long as you need me.”
She kissed his forehead, clinging to the back of his head. “I'm so glad you're here, son.”
“Me too, Mom. I need you more than you realize. And if you throw it all away by drinking...I know Katherine well enough to know that that's not what she would have wanted for you.”
“Are you kidding? The old bat had it in for me!” she chuckled.
“That's the mom I know and love. Now are you going to get dressed? The funeral starts in an hour.”
Jill nodded. Phillip excused her and then he thought back of all of the problems in his life that had caused him to flee town. Cricket. Nina. His son. Katherine and Jill's fighting. At that moment he knew there would be no more running away. He'd made many mistakes during his life, but he would make Katherine proud by not abandoning his mom, not when she needed him the most. He reached in his pocket and pulled out a well worn photo of Katherine. What a woman, he thought to himself as Jill came out of her bedroom.
Arm in arm, they left, headed towards the memorial service. It was not going to be easy, but if Katherine had taught them anything, it was that family stuck together, no matter what. Yes, it was a dark day for Genoa City, but Jill and Phillip realized that as long as they had their memories of her, then she would never, truly, ever, be gone.
